About Sedation

The Bespoke Dental & Implant Clinic is proud to offer intravenous sedation for adults. This is a technique that has offered a solution to thousands of dental phobic patients. If you feel you are unable to cope under normal conditions (leading you to avoid the care you need), please speak to us to explore how we can help

Who Can Benefit from Sedation?

There are many reasons to suffer from dental anxiety, which will make them hesitate before visiting the dentist. However, this can lead to issues down the line, so it’s crucial to sort out any potential problems as soon as they appear. You also want to get your teeth regularly checked and cleaned to either prevent or eliminate the risk of developing a serious condition, for example.

If you struggle with this type of anxiety, we can sedate you so that you remain calm while we perform all the necessary procedures.

We can discuss sedation if you:

  • Are afraid of pain – This is one of the major causes of dental anxiety and it’s easy to see why. If you’re already worried that something’s going to hurt, it can make you avoid the dentist and the treatments you need doing. With sedation, you’ll feel relaxed and, before you know it, we’ll have finished with the treatment.
  • Had bad experiences in the past – Being anxious about the dentist is normal when you’ve had bad experiences before, but not every visit to the dentist is the same. If you had issues in the past that are now affecting you, you can probably benefit from being sedated. Our dentists are highly skilled and qualified, so you can trust that you’re in good, safe hands at all times.
  • If you don’t like needles – This is a common phobia that can stop people from getting the treatment they need, which is not a problem with sedation.
  • Worrying about your teeth – You may have been avoiding the dentist for a long time and, because of this, you may be self-conscious about your smile. However, not only can you relax knowing that we’ve truly seen it all, but we can also sedate you so that you’re calm throughout the procedure.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation implies you are not put to sleep. While this is correct, the majority of patients report they can’t remember anything and that it’s similar to being asleep.

Conscious sedation in experienced hands is globally accepted as being safer than General Anaesthesia (GA). Since its use in Dentistry, we have managed to help those suffering with dental phobia or undergoing complex surgical treatments. With intravenous sedation, the amount of drug given can be titrated to achieve the most relaxed state for you.

Types of Sedation at the Bespoke Dental Clinic

We offer two different methods of sedation at our clinic, which gives you more options and allows you to select the one that best suits your individual case. They are:

Oral Sedation

We offer two different methods of sedation at our clinic, which gives you more options and allows you to select the one that best suits your individual case. They are:

Intravenous Sedation

This is the most common method used for adults. It involves a cannula being placed either in the arm or the back of the hand. A sedative drug is then slowly administered, and, within minutes, the ideal level of sedation is achieved.

What’s the Recovery Time?

Once the procedure is complete, we monitor you for a minimum of 60 minutes, in which time 99% of people are able to stand and walk unaided. You must bring an escort on the day to take you home safely, as driving or taking public transport is not permitted for 24 hours.

Most patients describe feeling back to normal within 2 hours. However, the drug can take several hours to exit the system, so it’s important that you follow instructions, take a day off work and rest.

If you’re concerned about sedation, talk to us and we’ll go through all the options with you. We’ll also discuss what you can expect and how this option can make treatment easier.
